Individualised phonological awareness programmes are offered one-to-one or in a small group setting. Phonological awareness refers to the understanding that spoken words can be broken down into smaller units. Students develop syllable awareness (recognising words can be divided into syllables e.g., dog is one syllable), onset-rime awareness (separating words into their beginnings (onset) and endings (rime unit) e.g., in the word dog, d is the onset and og is the rime) and phoneme awareness (a phoneme is the smallest unit of sound within a word e.g., dog /d/ / α/ /g/).
Assessment and monitoring of progress are an important component within the programme. Skills are taught and students are supported to generalise these skills to the reading and writing contexts. Phonological awareness contributes to reading comprehension and other literacy based tasks such as spelling and writing. Research suggests it is a critical building block in the development of effective literacy skills.
Numeracy (Numicon based)
Cost: Individual $36.00 (including GST) per 30 minute session
2 Children $27.00 (including GST) each, per 30 minute session
Group $288.00 (including GST) each, for eight 60 minute sessions
Venue: Level one, 184 Papanui Road, Merivale
Numicon encourages an understanding of number and numerical relationships which are essential for successful mental and written arithmetic. Numicon’s imagery uses patterns to represent each numeral; the patterns are structured so number relationships can be seen in a way not provided by written numerals. The activities are related to everyday mathematical experiences.
This programme has also been shown to benefit children with a wide range of needs including autism, dyslexia, dyscalculia, visual impairment, and also gifted learners who have learning difficulties. It is a hands-on programme.
